How to install Mathematica on a personal computer (Windows)

 

Mathematica is a technical computing software

The university subscribed to a Campus license which give access to Mathematica for Staff and Students.

 

The installation files are available on the poseidon network drive in the Resource_Media shared folder.

NB! Please go to https://unilux01.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/ITSH/pages/358318115 section to learn how to access Poseidon.

 

Windows path: \\poseidon\Resource_Media\Mathematica

Mac and Linux path: smb://poseidon/Resource_Media/Mathematica

  1. Quit any previous installations of Wolfram products that are running on your machine.

  2. Run Mathematica_12.1.0_WIN_DM.exe. The Download Manager opens and immediately begins downloading Mathematica’s installation files to your Downloads folder.

    Wait for the download to finish.

The Download Manager allows monitoring the progress of the download, as well as pausing it and resuming interrupted or paused downloads.

3. Select Launch.

4. The Setup dialog appears on your screen. Click Next to begin the installation process.

5. Click Next to install Mathematica to the default directory.

To install Mathematica to a different directory, click Browse and select the directory. Then click Next to continue.

6. Click Next to include WolframScript with your installation.

If you prefer not to install the extra components, uncheck the checkbox next to Optional Components and click Next to continue.

7. The installer adds Mathematica shortcuts to the Windows Start Menu in the Wolfram Mathematica folder.

To make the shortcuts appear in a different folder, click Browse and select a file. If you prefer not to make a shortcut in the Start Menu, check the box next to “Don’t create a Start Menu folder”. Then click Next to continue the installation.

8. The Remove Other Applications window only appears if there are older versions installed on the computer. Select any old versions of Mathematica that you want to uninstall, and then click Next.

9. The configuration of the Mathematica installation is finished. Click Install to begin installing.

Wait for the installation process to complete.


10. To complete the installation and launch Mathematica, click Finish.

 

 

How to install Mathematica on a personal computer (macOS)

  1. Quit any previous installations of Wolfram products that are running on your machine.

  2. If you already have an older version of Mathematica installed in your Applications folder, please rename it before installing.

  3. Double-click the Wolfram Mathematica 12.1 Download Manager .dmg file to start the download process.

4. Double-click the Wolfram Mathematica 12.1 Download Manager.app icon. The Download Manager will start and automatically begin downloading Mathematica’s installer to your Downloads folder.

The Download Manager allows monitoring the progress of the download, as well as pausing it and resuming interrupted or paused downloads.

 

5. Wait for the download to complete.

6. Select Launch. The Mathematica installer window appears. 

7. Drag the Mathematica.app icon to the Applications folder icon to begin installing.

8. Wait for the installation to complete.

 

Mathematica is now installed in your Applications folder. Next, activate the software to start using it.

Installing WolframScript

Mathematica also comes with an optional WolframScript installer.

  1. In the Mathematica installer window, double-click the WolframScript.pkg icon to run the WolframScript installer.

2. The Install WolframScript dialog appears. Click Continue.

3. Click Install to perform a default installation.

4. The installation is complete when the Summary dialog appears. Click Close to close the WolframScript installer.

 Activating Mathematica

Once the installation of Mathematica is complete, upon first launching it, you will be presented with the Wolfram Product Activation dialog.

At the University of Luxembourg, there are two methods to activate Mathematica: connecting to a license server or the online activation with an activation key

 

Activation connecting to the license server

Use this method if you don't need to use Mathematica outside the university

  1. Click on "Other Way to activate"

  2. Choose "Connect to a network license server"

  3. Enter server name "kojak"

 

Online activation with an activation key

Use this method if you need to use Mathematica outside the university

  1. Request Activation Key to the IT support; to do this you need to have a ticket created your behalf on the University's Service Portal

    1. Please visit the IT Helpdesk for Students or ask your study programme administrator to create a ticket for you.

  2. The IT support will register you at Wolfram, and Wolfram is going to send you the Activation Key by email.

  3. Launch Mathematica, enter the activation key in the product activation dialog box and click the Activate button.

VERY IMPORTANT: never put the serial number online. It must be communicated in person with instructions not to distribute it.

How to install STATA MP2 on a personal computer?

Stata/MP2 is a statistical software.

The university subscribed for a campus-wide annual license. It's available for staff and students on university and personal devices.

 

University computers

 

  • On a Windows computer, use Software Center application which is installed on you computer.

  • On a Mac computer, use the Parallels Application Portal which is installed on you computer.

  • On a Linux computer, the same procedure as for a personal device.

 

Personal devices: 

Prerequisite: You need the License and the Activation Key for this; please have a ticket created your behalf on the University's Service Portal. Please visit the IT Helpdesk for Students or ask your study programme administrator to create a ticket for you. Students should request the installation file and the license from their SPA and the administrator will provide them with the necessary things to use STATA.

VERY IMPORTANT: never put the serial number online. It must be communicated in person with instructions not to distribute it. 

Windows installation instructions

  • Get the installation file SetupStata16.exe from \\poseidon\Resource_Media\Stata\Stata16

  • If Stata 16 is currently installed, you must first uninstall Stata from the Windows Control Panel.

  • Double-click on the SetupStata16.exe file.

  • Install the Stata flavor Stata/MP .

  • For trouble-free installation, install in the default directories as referenced in the setup program.

 

Mac installation instructions

  • Get the installation file Stata16.dmg from smb://poseidon/Resource_Media/Stata/Stata16

  • Double-click on Stata16.dmg.

  • Double-click the Installer application.

  • You might see the warning 
    "Installer" is an application downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it? 
    If so, click the Open button from the warning dialog to launch the installer.

  • During the installation, choose the flavor Stata/MP

Linux installation instructions

  • Download Stata16Linux64.tar.gz from smb://poseidon/Resource_Media/Stata/Stata16

  • Become superuser and extract the gzipped tar file into an empty directory.

  • Make the installation directory /usr/local/stata16 and cd into it.

  • Type /wherever/extracted/files/are/install and follow the instructions.

  • For example, assuming you saved the archive in /home/you/Downloads, 

    • % sudo -s

    • # cd /tmp/

    • # mkdir statafiles

    • # cd statafiles

    • # tar -zxf /home/you/Downloads/Stata16Linux64.tar.gz

    • # cd /usr/local

    • # mkdir stata16

    • # cd stata16

      • # /tmp/statafiles/install

How to Install SPSS?

SPSS Statistics is a Statistical software. It is available for staff on university computers (Windows and Mac).

To obtain the license, send an email to the IT Helpdesk for Students, which includes your student number. Please also specify your computer’s operating system (Mac OS, Windows, Linux)

The IT support will send you a link for the installation and a license code .

After the installation you need to activate SPSS .
For the activation you need to start the authorization wizard and copy the license code you received.

How to connect to ArcGIS Online or to get ArcGIS Pro

ArcGIS is a complete system for designing and managing solutions through the application of geographic knowledge.

The university subscribed to a campus license which give access to ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online for staff and students. ArcGIS Pro can be installed on personal computers.

To access to ArcGIS Online or to download ArcGIS Pro:

Connect to the ArcGIS University portal https://unilux.maps.arcgis.com (ArcGIS organization's URL)
Choose [Université du Luxembourg] to login with your University credentials (Single Sign On).


Important: For technical reasons, ArcGIS will create an internal ArcGIS username like firstname.lastname@uni.lu_unilux or 99999999@uni.lu_unilux, don’t worry about that.
The way to login to ArcGIS remains with your university credentials by the ArcGIS organization's URL ( https://unilux.maps.arcgis.com ).

How to download ArcGIS Pro ?

Click your name at the top of the site
Click My settings / Licences / ArcGIS Pro Download
